Different types of marching bands

A marching band is made up of a group of individual musicians who play instruments like percussion and include movements like marching with music. Marching bands usually participate in outdoor events like sports competitions and indoor events like concerts.
Marching bands are usually determined by the style, size and functions of show and the type of instruments they usually incorporate and in the events they participate. Some of the important types of marching bands are as follows:
• Military Bands: The marching bands are believed to have come into existence because of nomadic musicians who showed their talent at celebrations and festivals in the olden times. When the country was split up into several states, these musicians were roped in to become part of armies which then culminated into “Military Bands.” This has been the main reason, even in recent times, many of the costumes of marching bands resemble military uniforms.
Military marching bands generally have instruments like brass and percussion. They generally stride ahead along with music played continuously with the tune and rhythm to aid the marching of the total military group.
• Show Bands: Their performances are mainly on the field and mostly in events of sports and rarely perform at parades. Their performances are particularly seen before, after and during middle time at football events. The instrumentation may depend upon the show. If it is a sporting event, the focus will be mainly on entertaining the audiences, while in a college competition, it will be on showing their visual and musical talent and abilities to the panel of judges.
• Carnival bands: These bands participate in competitions and parades. Their performance will be usually to march with tune to the music.
• Scramble Bands: They do not march in tune with the music, but may include humor parts in their performances.
• Drum and Bugle Corps style: Their marching is similar to military marching units.
The performance of the marching bands will depend upon the occasion, situation and the circumstances. They may be called in to entertain crowds, inauguration of sports events and celebrations.
